Celebrities at Mohali

After the thunderstorm scare over the crucial semifinal match in the cricket World Cup between India and Pakistan, it is now raining VVIPs and celebrities in Chandigarh and Mohali.

A day after rains triggered fears that the semifinal would be washed out, it was clear skies Wednesday. And while the much discussed match continued to draw all attention, two of the most important people coming to watch it found enough limelight too.

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh was here, and so was his Pakistani counterpart Yousuf Raza Gilani with a 45-member delegation. Accompanying Manmohan Singh on the same flight were his wife Gursharan Kaur, Congress president Sonia Gandhi and her son Rahul Gandhi.

Planning Commission deputy chairman Montek Singh Ahluwalia also arrived on the same flight. International Cricket Council president and Agriculture Minister Sharad Pawar reached here Wednesday morning. His party colleague Praful Patel was here too.

Leading Bollywood actor Aamir Khan, director Madhur Bhandarkar, actor Suneil Shetty and actor Vivek Oberoi and his wife were among those who travelled to Mohali, 10 km from Chandigarh, to watch the cricketing action unfold.

Industrialist and IPL team Kings XI Punjab co-owner Ness Wadia as well as United Breweries Vijay Mallya and his son Siddharth were also there to cheer on India at the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) stadium. Scores of luxury cars, including Mercedes, BMWs, Audis, Land Cruisers and Toyota Camrys, were seen lined up at the Chandigarh airport to pick up the VIPs and celebrities.

Ultimate battle of Cricket

A tiny north Indian city has overnight become a hot tourist destination, drawing prime ministers, corporate czars, showbiz celebrities and passionate fans for what is touted as the "mother of all cricket contests." Nothing gets bigger in this part of the globe than a cricket match featuring India and Pakistan, who fought three wars since their independence from Britain in 1947.

The rivalry will be renewed in Wednesday's cricket World Cup semifinal in Mohali in the state of Punjab, and the city administration is already bracing for a logistical nightmare. Many government and cricket officials fear the match could be a potential tinderbox given the emotions involved, and some have urged the fans and the media not to hype what is essentially a cricket contest. "It's like any other match. The media hype around the match, I think, is totally unnecessary," Pakistan team manager Intikhab Alam told CNN-IBN channel.

"We have come here to play cricket. This is not a war field or anything. I'm sure you will see a great game of cricket," said the former Pakistan captain, who has coached the Punjab team in Ranji trophy. Even South African all-rounder Jacques Kallis hoped the high-profile match would pass without anything untoward. "India versus Pakistan in Mohali is a spectacle not to be ignored. Like everyone else, my greatest wish is that the match takes place without any 'incident,' either on or off the field," he wrote in a column that appeared in Sunday's Hindustan Times newspaper. Former India pace bowler Javagal Srinath advised the Indian team not to let the "dream semifinal" to distract them from their ultimate goal of winning the title.

"The general perception among the Indian fans that beating Pakistan is the be-all and end-all must change," Srinath wrote in the same newspaper. "We have to move out of that line of thinking. As a nation, we have evolved, and I don't think there can be any compromise on winning the final." Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and his Pakistani counterpart, Yusuf Raza Gilani, will watch the match in what is billed as "cricket diplomacy." Security was ramped up at the Punjab Cricket Association stadium on Sunday as India staged its first training session ahead of the high-profile semifinal.

The match, the first between the archrivals on Indian soil since the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, gained an added security headache Sunday when Gilani confirmed he would attend Wednesday's clash. Police were out in greater numbers in and around the ground on Sunday and there were even "media security officers" escorting reporters into the grounds. Meanwhile, the security presence was equalled only by the increased number of television trucks parked side by side outside the stadium, all eager to beam back pictures of such stars as local hero Yuvraj Singh and Sachin Tendulkar.

Pakistan, the 1992 champions, were put through their paces once again by coach Waqar Younis in an early morning training stint that started with a lively soccer match. Coming back to the PCA Stadium was proving particularly pleasant for Pakistan manager Intikhab Alam, who earlier in his career coached a Punjab team featuring both Yuvraj and India off-spinner Harbhajan Singh. "I am nostalgic; I remember this place very well," former Test leg-spinner Alam told the Sunday Pioneer. "The two years I spent here earned me friends for life. It feels great to come back."

Alam's relaxed mood was in keeping with that of his team. Opening batsman Mohammad Hafeez said on Saturday neither he nor his Pakistan colleagues had any qualms about security, saying: "We have no fear or a feeling of (any) shortcoming when it comes to security. "That's not our job; our job is to play cricket. To provide security is the responsibility of the ICC (International Cricket Council) and the BCCI (Board of Control for Cricket in India). "We are very happy and we are enjoying ourselves very much."

About 3,000 police will patrol Wednesday's match, with about 2,000 expected to be deployed in and around the 30,000-capacity stadium on match day.  An estimated 1,000 police have already descended on the luxury Hotel Taj in nearby Chandigarh where both teams are staying, a force that includes Indian army commandos. The game has already sparked a flurry of political activity. Faharullah Babar, a spokesman for Pakistan President Asif Ali Zardari, responded to Singh's "cricket diplomacy". "It was decided in response to the Indian Prime Minister's invitation that Prime Minister Yousuf Raza Gilani will visit India to witness the semi final cricket match," he said.

Elsewhere the frantic scramble for hotel rooms and tickets showed no signs of slackening, even though the PCA had insisted as early as Tuesday that the 14,000 available tickets had been sold, with the rest in the hands of the ICC.  According to a newspaper report, airport authorities have received requests from business tycoons, including India's richest man, Mukesh Ambani, and fellow industrialist Vijay Mallya, to allow them to park their private jets in Chandigarh.

While politicians and Bollywood celebrities will also be in tow, there is a growing sense of anger among the ticketseeking fans who complained of large-scale black-marketing. The CNN-IBN channel claimed tickets priced at 15,000 Indian rupees ($335.6 U.S.) were available in the black market for 100,000 rupees ($2,237), while tickets priced at 10,000 were being sold at five times their original worth.  Both Chandigarh, about 10 kilometres from the stadium, and Mohali are bursting at the seams and about 2,000 hotels rooms are proving inadequate to accommodate the visitors, and the rush has not ended yet.

"For a match as big as this one, we cannot do anything about black-market tickets," said PCA joint secretary GS Walia. "As far as we are concerned, we only gave the tickets to those who stood in the queues and bought them. We cannot keep track if they sell these in (the) black (market)." As for the game itself, Pakistan, the 1992 champion, insists all the pressure will be on India in Mohali on Wednesday, where the host's status as tournament favourite will come under scrutiny from a crowd made up almost entirely of home support.

"If India were going to win the World Cup, this is their best chance," said Imran Khan, who captained the 1992 Pakistan title-winning team. "I am not trying to play mind games, but the fact that they are favourites and are playing at home will mean they are under more pressure. "My advice to the Indian team is to take sleeping pills, otherwise they won't be able to sleep," added Imran in his Hindustan Times column. Regardless of the match outcome, there is one result everyone hopes to see. Alam appealed for calm between the two sets of fans ahead of the game, saying, "Let it remain as cricket and don't make us feel as if we are standing on a war front."

INDIA-PAKISTAN CONFLICTS OVER THE YEARS

Partition 1947 After India's independence, the subcontinent is split into Hindu-dominated India and the new Muslim state of Pakistan in 1947. An estimated half a million people are killed in resulting riots and population relocations. In 1990s, militant Muslim groups emerge in area. 1998 Nuclear fears Both sides conduct nuclear tests, prompting U.S. and several other nations to impose sanctions on both nations. India and Pakistan reaffirm will to resolve conflicts peacefully in 1999. 1999 Kargil conflict Pakistani-backed forces infiltrate Kashmir; India launches air strikes against the rebels. 2001 brink of war Buildup of troops along Indo-Pakistani border after tension along ceasefire line builds. Attack on Kashmiri assembly in Srinagar kills 38; another attack on Indian parliament in Delhi kills 14. India blames Kashmiri militants.

Jackman and SRK at a conference in Mumbai

Hollywood superstar Hugh Jackman and Shah Rukh Khan will meet at a film and media conference to be held in Mumbai, for an interaction on the two biggest film industries across the globe. And if the two hunks on stage are not enough, none other than, Aishwarya Rai Bachchan will be introducing the Wolverine star on stage.

However, it all wouldn't have been possible without Karan Johar. "It was Fox Star and Karan who were instrumental in bringing Hugh to Mumbai," reveals a source. "Jackman will be coming down on 24th night and will be attending the closing ceremony of the conference on the 25th.

He will talk about cinema and the closing gap between Hollywood and Bollywood along with KJo and SRK. Shah Rukh will be the only star interacting with Jackman. It is still unknown if SRK or Karan will host a party for him to meet the other B-town celebrities later," adds the source.

When contacted, Vijay Singh, CEO of Fox Star India confirmed, saying, "We planned to bring a big Hollywood celebrity and Hugh is right up there. He was our first choice and everything fell into place. We are delighted to have Hugh coming down.

He is going to attend the closing session of the conference. Karan will be in conversation with Hugh and Shah Rukh Khan. It will be a wonderful platform due to the presence of two of the best from their respective industries."

Kashmir – hot place on tourism map

It seems that Kashmir is nowadays a prime destination on the tourism map as it’s not just the Bollywood stars but international cricketers too are air-dashing to the Valley to enjoy the snow laden slopes. If it was Ranbir Kapoor last month seen shooting in the famous tourist resort Pahalgam, the Oscar winning Music Director AR Rahman has too chosen the serene but chilly environs of the ski-resort in south Kashmir for composing his number for the movie Rockstar in which Kapoor is playing the lead role.

In Gulmarg the atmosphere was no less electrifying. Famous cricketer turned coach Jhonty Rhodes arrived on a week-long visit to the resort in north Kashmir to test his snow boarding skills and enjoy winter sports. “He (AR Rahman) is on 2-day visit to Valley. He visited Pahalgam early during the day for composition of his song. And later returned to Srinagar where he is putting up in a houseboat in Nigeen Lake,” sources said.

Talking to media persons at Pahalgam, Rahman was reported as saying, “Kashmir is a paradise and a boon to Bollywood." On his arrival, Rhodes, the former South African cricketer, on Sunday drove to the Royal Springs Golf Course in the city. Sources said he relished Kashmiri Wazwan, particularly Kababs and later drove uphill to Parimahal where he stayed for sometime.

“Before leaving for Gulmarg yesterday he had an interaction with Chief Minister Omar Abdullah,” sources said. Jhonty is on week-long visit to enjoy snow-boarding and other winter sports in the slopes of Gulmarg. “They (Rahman and Rhodes) are global figures. Their presence in Kashmir is good news and will definitely send good signals and attract more and more tourists to the valley,” said Director Tourism, Farooq Ahmad Shah.

The celebrities, he said, have come to Kashmir on their own. “But the department will be extending all the assistance and facilities for making their stay comfortable,” Shah said.  While Bollywood celebrities have been frequently visiting the Valley--once a favourite destination for film shooting--the international cricketers have too started to choose Kashmir as a holidaying destination. Last year Rhodes’ former team-mate and the present coach of Indian cricket team, Gary Kristen, had also visited Gulmarg.

Lara Dutta and Mahesh Bhupati

The age-old notion that Bollywood actresses shy away from marriage seems to be fading away. While quite a few weddings have been solemnised in B-town this year, a handful seem to be getting ready to get hitched in the near future.

Also low-key, close knit family affairs seem to be gaining precedence over the otherwise, big-fat Indian wedding. Early this year actor Imran Khan tied the knot with Avantika Malik in a private ceremony in the outskirts of Mumbai.

TV actor Rajeev Khandelwal recently tied the knot with long-time girlfriend Manjiri Phadnis with minimal B-Town presence. Actor Vivek Oberoi tied the knot with Priyanka Alva early this year while actor Sameer Dattani also tied the knot with his long-time girlfriend recently.

Actress Lara Dutta married tennis star Mahesh Bhupati in a private ceremony in Goa, where one saw a select few Bollywoodians in attendance. The marriage was a three day affair with a day reserved for the sangeet, a day for the traditional wedding and another for a traditional Church wedding. Recently, actress Gul Panag stunned everyone with the news of her marriage to former classmate and airline pilot Rishi Attari. The duo got married as per Sikh rituals in a Gurdwara in Panchkula, in the presence of close family and friends.

Theatre and TV personality Juhi Babbar too exchanged wedding vows with TV actor Anoop Soni early this week. The duo had been discreet about their relationship and very few people knew that they had tied the knot. Sometime last year, actress Kim Sharma who had an on and off relationship with cricketer Yuvraj Singh tied the knot with Africa-based businessman named Ali Punjani. The ceremony was a hush-hush event that took place in Mombasa, Kenya.

Actress Celina Jaitley has been in the news recently for her relationship with a Dubai-based Austrian businessman Peter Haag. The actress, say sources, is ready to take the plunge and will get married to Peter on September 23 in Egypt, where his family is based.

Actress Soha Ali Khan, who has been going steady with actor Kunal Khemu, also plans to tie the knot soon. Her actor brother Saif Ali Khan who has been dating Kareena Kapoor has also expressed a desire to get married but not in the near future. Reportedly, actress Katrina Kaif too had earlier said that would want to get married and settle down by 2012, while Rani Mukerjee too has said that her next step in life would be marriage.

Hot celebrities

Brad Pitt & Angelina Jolie

Whether it is signing a multi-million dollar movie deal or taking their six kids out on a supermarket stroll, everything that Hollywood’s ‘it’ couple say or do makes news. Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie — Brangelina to fans the world over — are filmdom’s most powerful couple, dictating box-office figures, fashion trends, relationship rules and parenting codes. When they are not making a pretty picture together at red carpet dos, they are zipping off to war-ravaged countries to offer aid and relief. Today, Brangelina is a force, a product and a marketing mechanism, topping power lists individually and as a couple. What makes brand Brangelina even bigger? The fact that Hollywood’s most powerful couple are also its most gorgeous!

David & Victoria Beckham

He: one of the world’s most recognised soccer stars. She: a former Spice Girl-turned-fashion icon and celebrity designer. Fabulously rich and fabulously famous, the Beckhams — David and Victoria, aka Posh — are a power couple. Red carpet events or football matches, celebrity gatherings or state dinners, ad campaigns or brand launches, the two never put a foot wrong. Wherever they go and whatever they do, David and Posh are most-wanted — together. Sunglasses to perfumes, clothes to jewellery, the net worth of Brand Beckham has soared over the last decade, touching the $50 million mark in 2010. With baby number four on the way and a booming social life, Brand Beckham can only get bigger.

Barack & Michelle Obama

He is the most powerful man in the world. She is the power behind the most powerful man in the world. US president Barack Obama and First Lady Michelle are a force to reckon with, at the White House and outside. While his political status invariably spells power, it is her carefully cultivated public image — Harvard law graduate, social activist, fashion icon, flawless speaker, supportive wife and doting mother — that contributes significantly towards making the Obamas a power couple. The much-in-love pair represents the values of middle-class living, high thinking and family bonding, counting as one of Gen Y’s most inspirational role models.

Prosenjit & Arpita Chatterjee

Though Tollywood’s first couple are rarely seen together in public and they haven’t been co-stars since Pratibad in 2001, Prosenjit and Arpita Chatterjee combine glamour with power in tinsel town. While he is Tollywood’s leading star, she has just made a comeback to films, picking and choosing her projects with studied care. A far cry from snooty star spouses, Prosenjit-Arpita make an eye-catching pair, friendly and easy-going. If only they did a film together now...

Bill & Melinda Gates

The power couple of philanthropy, Bill and Melinda Gates have brought hope into the lives of millions across the world through their charity work. The founder of Microsoft Corporation — and for years the world’s richest man — and his wife of 16 years are the force behind the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, the largest transparently operated private foundation in the world. As a team, Bill and Melinda are committed to working towards better healthcare facilities, poverty alleviation, expansion of educational opportunities and access to information technology globally. A power couple like no other.

Saif Ali Khan & Kareena Kapoor

Though unmarried, Saifeena’s power in Bollywood and beyond is never in doubt. While their films together —Tashan to Kurbaan — may not have set the box office on fire, Saif Ali Khan and Kareena Kapoor are the in-demand couple for big-deal endorsements, celebrity interviews and flashy public dos. Even individually, their careers are on a high. She has a film with each of the three Khans this year, while he wears the dual hats of actor and producer with ease. As different as chalk and cheese, together Saif and Kareena are dynamite. And then, of course, is the lineage. He royalty, she from the first family of Bollywood. Can it get more powerhouse than that?

Ajay Devgn & Kajol

A Bollywood couple that defy tried-and-tested norms, Ajay and Kajol spell power because they do things on their own terms — individually and together. At a time when the Khans and the Kumars vie for box-office glory, Ajay quietly walks away with a couple of hits every year while Kajol is the only B-town heroine who can guarantee a film a good opening. Together, their films may not have set the cash registers jingling but the Devgns are still greatly in demand — on the big screen and in the ad world.

Mukesh & Nita Ambani

He is India’s richest man. She helps him plan how to rake in those millions. Mukesh and Nita Ambani are undoubtedly the most powerful couple in Indian business. He is the corporate honcho, dictating local and global business. She is actively involved in philanthropic activities in the fields of education, human resources and disaster relief, besides being the maalkin of Mumbai Indians, their IPL team.

Abhishek Bachchan & Aishwarya Rai Bachchan

Often billed India’s biggest power couple, Abhi-Ash have a total net worth running into a few hundred crores. Red carpet at the Academy Awards or a film set in Mumbai, the Abhishek-Aishwarya star power commands attention and respect. Ash is the more visible of the two — from a Miss World title to a wax statue at Madame Tussauds — with Abhi lending strong and silent support. Add to that the Bachchan surname, which automatically opens doors and gets the red carpets rolling. All thanks to Paa!

Shilpa Too Hot For World Kannada Meet

Following close on the heels of the recent displeasure expressed by writers over Infosys chief N R Narayana Murthy inaugurating the Viswa Kannada Sammelana (World Kannada Meet), another noted personality faces their ire for a very different reason. Writers preferred Aishwarya Rai Bachchan as special invitee and perfect representative of Kannada pride outside the state, as opposed to Shilpa Shetty, because they think that the latter is known for her skimpy dressing sense.

Shilpa has acted in Kannada films including Preethsod Thappa and Auto Shankar. But, the writers were not happy with her because of her steamy scenes and she exposing her navel while draped in a sari. They added that while she was a celebrity outside the state, she could not be seen as the pride of the state. Deepika Padukone was also short listed along with Aishwarya and Shilpa as these glam dolls of Hindi filmdom are from the Tulu speaking part of Karnataka. But, since she was currently out of India and since the orthodox writers did not favour Shilpa, former Miss World Aishwarya was a clear winner.

However, organisers sought to decline that skimpy dress sense was the criteria saying that Aishwarya was always the proffered choice. A source from the organising committee requesting anonymity said "We prefer Shilpa to other Bollywood stars since she has acted in Kannada movies and connects well with the Kannada audience. But some writers are not comfortable with the idea and plans have been changed just to avoid controversy."

"Shilpa Shetty was in the list, but we could not include everyone because of the space and time limit. Also, security was another major concern and we decided that Aishwarya would be the only invitee among all the film stars," said Prabhakara Kore, working president of the meet. "I hope she will speak Kannada when she greets the audience," Prabhakara added. Tara, Kannada film actress and a member of the BJP, was irked. She said, "It is ridiculous to reject anyone for their onscreen dressing. We have to be mature enough to see an actor beyond their onscreen roles. If we say Shilpa was seen in revealing clothes, then Aishwarya is no exception as she has been seen in steamy scenes as well."

"Shilpa or Deepika are a better choice since both have acted in Kannada movies unlike Aishwarya, who has none to her credit," she said. She also added that while people have heard Shilpa and Deepika speaking Kannada, no one she knew could vouch for Aishwarya.  I M Vittalmurthy, special officer of the meet, said, "Not that we have ignored other achievers by inviting Aishwarya alone. We have selected her as a representative of all of them."
